PE
Curriculum Intent and Overview
At the heart of our Physical Education curriculum is the aim to foster a genuine enjoyment of physical activity across a broad range of sports and movement experiences. Through a fully inclusive approach, we seek to develop physical literacy by equipping all students with the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to be active and healthy. Our curriculum is designed to inspire lifelong participation in physical activity, encouraging positive attitudes towards health, well-being, and active living that extend far beyond the school environment.
PE Department Vision
Our Physical Education department is committed to fostering a passion for sport by valuing participation, effort, and continual improvement for all students. We aim to develop physical literacy by building on each student’s starting point, ensuring sustained progress in both performance and understanding. Through meaningful and engaging experiences, we seek to inspire lifelong participation by emphasising the positive impact of sport on wellbeing, confidence, and independence. Alongside this, we promote the confident and accurate use of key Physical Education vocabulary, enabling students to articulate their learning and deepen their understanding of physical activity.
Literacy, Oracy and PE
Our literacy strategy centres on embedding a consistent Language of the Lesson, where each lesson is anchored by a single, high-utility word or concept. Grounded in the pedagogical research of Doug Lemov and Alex Quigley, this approach recognises that explicit vocabulary instruction is essential for deep understanding and equitable access to learning. By explicitly teaching, modelling, and rehearsing key tier 2 and tier 3 vocabulary through structured routines such as choral repetition, student-friendly definitions, and contextual application, we develop students’ oracy, comprehension, and confidence in academic language. This daily focus supports retrieval, reinforces schema building, and demystifies subject-specific terminology, helping all students—regardless of starting point—to articulate their learning clearly and retain knowledge over time. Ultimately, the Language of the Lesson is a small but powerful habit that strengthens literacy, sharpens thinking, and enriches learning across the curriculum.
