“For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance.
Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”
Matthew 25:29
Overview
English contributes to the school curriculum by placing reading at the heart of our knowledge rich curriculum which provides a platform for all learners to succeed in later life, whilst gaining inspiring and powerful cultural knowledge of the world around them. We strive to achieve this by studying a selection of the most prominent and important texts in the English language by some of the world’s most significant and celebrated writers. We want for all our students to be empowered by the written and spoken word so they can become the voices that define our future.
Curriculum Intent
To develop students’ abilities to express themselves coherently, accurately and concisely in writing and speech. Our broad and balanced curriculum builds confident, creative and thoughtful lifelong learners.
- Knowledge rich curriculum built around reading and acquiring vocabulary.
- Broad and balanced to accommodate each individual starting point and offer the same opportunity to all abilities to close the advantage gap.
- We inspire the whole student through cultural capital and study the contexts behind texts and why they fit in to the wider world.
- Skills focus at KS4 as a by-product of the knowledge gained at KS3.
- Sequenced to build and Interleave through thematic study to provide opportunities which create, and craft written and spoken responses.
